Liverpool Stretching Lead in Premier League 2

Liverpool U23s have strengthened their lead in the Premier League 2 by five points after winning 3-1 against Manchester United on Monday evening at Leigh Sports Village. The Reds claimed their seventh win of the season.

Ejaria, Grujic and Wilson starred in the win

The strong line-up of Liverpool included Marko Grujic, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Danny Ings, Harry Wilson, Jon Flanagan and Ben Woodburn.

A physical battle between the two teams particularly James Wilson and Ben Woodburn dominated the early parts of the game.

Ben Woodburn missed a great chance to break the deadlock after five minutes. Trent Alexander-Arnold put pressure on Wilson, winning possession and enabling Woodburn the opportunity to have an effort but unfortunately it went narrowly wide.

Liverpool’s well-deserved opener arrived on 14 minutes in a dominant first-half by a strong but low finish by Ovie Ejaria across United keeper Keiran O’Hara.

After the first goal, the Reds side looked confident with Grujic anchoring the midfield. Danny Ings released a good pass to Alexander-Arnold who fired into the side netting.

United left-back defender Demitri Mitchell offered his team a lone effort on goal. Cutting in on his right foot he put a bending of a low effort wide of the post.

United Manchester Almost Stole a Win

United momentarily threatened to seize something from the game when James Wilson steamrolled on the hour but the Reds yielded a strong response and put the game to bed , Grujic’s strike responding to one from Wilson that secured three points.

Grabara was at his best to turn away Joe Riley’s threatening cross inside the post in the second period. Joshua Bohui had the chance to carry the ball too far, Flanagan the culprit, and he played in Wilson finishing similarly to Ejariaís.

However, Liverpool regained their lead with 20 minutes left of the game. Grujic made a great run from a Woodburn corner to drop his marker and nod a header down and into the net.

United may feel they were hard done by but it was a well-deserved win for Liverpool and continues a strong run of form for the U23 side in Premier League 2.
